Established in 2008, Rolling Homes is a family owned business run by co-directors Mark and Claire Cooper from their new 16,000 sq. feet premises on Ennerdale Road in Shrewsbury. Mark was a cabinet maker prior to starting Rolling Homes and is a specialist in bespoke kitchen design and production.
“I have always had a personal interest in motorhomes and travelling, and was frustrated that I couldn’t find one which suited my needs”, explained Mark. “Converting VWs was a far cry from creating kitchens, but since I knew I had the expertise and experience in producing beautifully finished products, I decided to start designing and creating my own bespoke interiors, tailored to suit different needs.”
At Rolling Homes personal advice is an essential part of the customer experience as Mark and his team seek to establish the right VW vehicle and the specification that suits the customer. They have standard high quality products available, but will convert the VW Van to the specific demands of the customer, making it bespoke. That can include the provision for disabled access by wheelchair.
Rolling Homes produce between 40 and 50 conversions per year and are indebted to the close relationship they have developed with the Greenhous VW Van Centres in Shrewsbury and Bilston. As Mark says; “The VW Transporter is much sought after as a base vehicle for conversions as it retains a very good residual value and is of excellent build quality. It is the van of choice for us and is the basis for our four camper designs. Greenhous will source the Transporters for us and look after maintenance needs.”
Rolling Homes have four demonstrators in their range ready for inspection. The starting level is the Shackleton, next is the Livingstone, the most popular Columbus and at the prestige end of the range is the Classic. All benefit from the same high quality build using solid wood furniture, usually oak or maple, sheep wool insulation and quality fitments, including wiring looms and gas installations, most from local companies which the Coopers reveal is an important factor in supporting the local economy.
Although they sell heavily through visits to their website, Mark and Claire are often to be found displaying the Rolling Homes products at shows around the country. They will be at Peterborough on the 15th to 17th April, at the largest outdoor motorhome event in Europe. They were recently at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at the NEC where Adam Kilvert, sales executive at Greenhous VW Van Centre in Bilston caught up with them. Adam commented: “Rolling Homes have been a valued customer for a number of years and we are going to display one of their models at our Bilston VW Van Centre. The quality of the final conversion is outstanding and it is a credit to Mark and his team that they spend so much time with customers ensuring that every detail is spot on. The Classic was on display at the NEC and the public were literally drooling over it!”
Mark is keen to emphasise the importance of taking customers through the decision process. “Some customers have already decided on the specific vehicle and fittings they require,” says Mark. “However, many need guidance and we will ‘hold their hand’ through the process with weekend trials of our demonstrator vans available. It is vitally important to get all the detail agreed before the conversion process starts. Usually a conversion takes us two weeks.”
Rolling Homes Camper Vans are to be found the length and breadth of the country from the Shetland Isles to the Isle of Wight. Customers see the advantages of low cost holidays in their camper van coupled with the freedom and versatility of exploring this country and abroad at their own pace.
